From Supra SONIC on SF
Since Apexi came out with the third generation afc, and since there isn't a write-up for the 2jz-ge engine, I am making this write-up.
Some notes:
You can't just use the installation provided by the installation booklet provided with the unit, nor can you use the mkiv.com write-up. Why? Apexi posted a US update for the S-AFC because their origonal ECU scematic wasn't worldwide for the Supra and even the update has some problems (Note: you can get wiring and setup guides at Apexi's website
HERE You can't use the mkiv.com install because it is for the 2jz-gte engine, which is different than the 2jz-ge and because the instructions don't include all the 3rd generation features. Even so, the installation guide is a good backbone, so I will only be changing or adding things to it.
HERE IS THE LINK TO THE SITE. Go to the tech articles and look half way down the page for the write-up.
From here on in, refer to the article and note where I add or change directions.
What you need:
*EDIT*Get all sockets
*ADD* Dozen Wiresplicers (You can find these in the electrical section of a hardware store. They allow you to splice two wires together without having to cut or remove the insulation on the wire. Big hassle, headache and time saver).
Getting Started:
1.5--2.5. *ADD* Getting to the wiring harness...
Go to the passenger side of the car. On the right side of the floor is a black plastic cover held in by a wedge screw. Push on the middle of the screw and pull it out, then pull out the side piece which is part of the door trim--it just pulls out and snaps in. Once that is removed pull back the carpet which will expose the ECU protective shield (the carpet is held in by two plastic screw wedges at the top). Use your sockets to remove the two nets holding the shield down and remove the shield. The ECU should now be exposed. Remove the last nut that is holding the ECU down. Then slip the end over the screw and pull the ECU down and it should be free. The top part of the ECU harness can be removed by pinching and pulling on it. The bottom harness needs to be unscrewed to be removed, either with a screwdriver or with your sockets. After unscrewing the harness pull it off the ECU and set the ECU out of the way. You may need to remove some electrical tape that is binding the wires, so you have complete access to them.
3. *ADD* Refer to these articles for the 2jz-ge wiring diagram:
Knock Sensor
Terminals for 2jz-gte
Karman Sensor NOT Hot Wire For 93.5-95 Supras
Note that the wiring diagram is for the 2jz-gte. The 93.5-95 supra 2jz-ge's uses a Karman Sensor so we use the pink and orange wires, not the yellow and white. Also, #49 is Knock Sensor 2 and #50 is Knock Sensor 1.
FOR 93.5-95 NA'S:
7. *EDIT* Use Pink wire instead of Yellow wire.
8. *EDIT* Use Orange wire instead of White wire.
12. *EDIT* Yellow and White wires are not used.
For all years:
13. *ADD* You can do like I did and splice the Purple wire to the rear 2nd Knock Sensor (#49), or you can following the knock sensor instillation instructions in the manual, which have you check each sensor to see which is larger. Chances are that you will want to monitor the rear sensor because that is where knocking will most likely occur.
Note: Follow these instructions on top of reading the manual and reading the mkiv.com write-up, so you get safety and misc. instructions. Also, I suggest following the SETUP as instructed by the manual. MKIV.COM instructions are for the 2jz-gte and don’t apply to us completely, and they are for the second, not the third generation S-AFC. All you need to know, on top of the instructions for knock setting and throttle setting, is the following (*only for 93.5-95 supras*):
Sensor Type: Karmen (No adjustment needed)
Cylinders: 6 w/ arrow up for Thr.
…I hope this write-up helps. Remember to use this as a template over the mkiv.com write-up and the manual’s instructions. Have fun.
