Its possible it insulates a little too well, cause most powder coating, is done to keep heat out. So it will, like you said keep heat in....I would get a nice blanket for the hot-side, and then just wrap the exhaust. They also sell a spray that hardens the wrap, once you have it on. So you may want to just look into that.
